Dr. Serene Tan is a Fellow at the Mowat Centre, and co-authored the report “Diaspora Nation: An Inquiry into the Economic Potential of Diaspora Networks in Canada” (with Maurice Bitran), and most recently released “Redesigning Collaboration: Opportunities for Innovation in Toronto’s Labour Market” (with Jill Shirey).
Serene received her Ph.D. in Geography from York University. Her research includes diasporas, global urban theory, diversity and immigration politics, cultural and national identities, postcolonial theory, and Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific regions. She occasionally teaches courses in urban studies, geography, and Canadian studies at York University and the University of Toronto.
