About: The Brexit negotiating period began on March 29, 2017 when the United Kingdom triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, with official negotiations starting on June 19, 2017. General elections in June resulted in what is considered a weaker mandate for the current government, owing to a coalition government between the British Conservative party and the Democratic Unionist Party from Ireland. With a weaker mandate, a two year deadline and host of complicated issues to resolve, these negotiations are crucial to the UK’s economic future. Dr. Achim Hurrelmann is currently serving as the Director of the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) and as the Associate Director of the Centre for European Studies (CES), both of which are housed at Carleton University. He holds the Jean Monnet Chair for “Democracy in the European Union”, and is one of the leading Canadian scholars of European integration.
