Guest: Dr. Paul Evans, Professor, School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia

About: In this episode, we explore The People’s Republic of China’s (China) expansionist policies in Southeast Asia. In recent years, China has challenged existing international frameworks like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) through territorial claims and developing infrastructure to reinforce those claims. In particular, the South China Sea remains a contentious area. Already subject to competing territorial disputes from six other adjacent states, since the end of WWII China has claimed the South China Sea via its “9-dash line.” The line extends far beyond China’s coastline and any maritime norms. Why is China interested in pursuing an expansionist foreign policy in this region? How does this alter the important relationships it has with countries in Southeast Asia? Join our new host Rasha Al-Katta in her debut episode with our guest Dr. Paul Evans from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Paul Evans is a professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia. His research is focused on reframing the Asia-Pacific security order. He is currently finishing a book on global China.
