About: In this episode, we put the spotlight on hydroelectric power in the Horn of Africa. We discuss the construction of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa once completed. While the dam could lock in energy security and contribute to Ethiopia’s economic growth for years to come, it is also causing some tensions with Egypt, as the dam may curtail water availability along the Nile river, impacting irrigation, food and water supply, and jobs. What are the current status of negotiations between Ethiopia and Egypt to complete this project? What other foreign powers are involved and what is their interest in the region? Dr. Verhoeven explains the politics surrounding the construction of the dam and the importance of such a large infrastructure project in the region.
